Contains a single test device, instructions, and laboratory analysis. Pre addressed shipping box and postage are included. Results are available the next business day upon receipt by Laboratory.
Used for long term measurements lasting 3 - 12 months. A long-term test is the best way to determine your exposure to Radon during different seasons and living conditions in your home.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has verified this product for accurate radon measurement. NEHA & NRPP listed.
How to Test
If your home has a basement, open and place the canister anywhere in the basement. Do not place the canister in a garage, root cellar, crawl space or sump pump pit. If your house does not have a basement, place the open canister in the lowest livable level of your home in any room except the bathroom, kitchen, laundry room or porch. If testing more than one area of your home, place the other canister in a frequently used living area.Do not expose the canister to noticeable drafts such as near a window, fireplace or open door. Canister should be placed at least 2 feet above the floor, at least 1 foot away from exterior walls, at least 4 inches away from other objects and at least 3 feet away from windows, doors or other openings. Do not place in cupboard, closet, drawer, etc. Canister should be exposed to the air people breathe.
Cut or tear the pouch open and remove the Alpha track detector. Do not remove the cover of the test device. Expose to room air for a period of 3 months to 1 year. Three months should be the minimum for this type of test. When exposure time is complete, place the testing device into the U.S. postage prepaid mailing envelope along with the information sheet and mail it.
Information You Will Provide
Receiving the Results
The lab must receive your sample within 8 calendar days. All test kits have return U.S. postage prepaid for first class US Mail and are to be delivered to Massachusetts. Generally, there is no problem in meeting this delivery timeframe, however if there are holiday weekends and you live on the west coast, Canada, Alaska, Hawaii, etc. or there are winter storms that may cause a delay in the US Postal Service, please consider sending the sample with US Priority Mail, which is a 2-3 day service.
How it Works
The 3-12 month Alpha Track radon test kit is a diffusion-based track detector. The current improved design filters out dust and radon progeny through a structural filter that is an integral part of the housing, resulting in increased sturdiness. The housing is injection molded from electrically conducting plastic in order to minimize electrical charge effects from the positively charged radon progeny generated inside the detector. The hemispherical base is designed to maximize sensitivity and create a more uniform track distribution for better counting statistics.
The track detector foil inside the housing is from dosimetry-grade CR-39 cast specifically for our Laboratory. The sheets of CR-39 are laser cut and engraved with a unique batch number. Each batch is calibrated and receives its own calibration factor. All sheets are also checked for background tracks.
Accustar Labs is the only Radon Testing Lab in the United States to use electrochemical etching to process its alpha track foils which are subsequently counted with computer-aided image analysis equipment. This kind of system was found superior to chemically etched alpha track radon testing.
All test kit foils are counted using a computer-aided image analysis system. The automated equipment is quite reproducible; rereads of the same group of foils have a mean within 2% of the original mean and coefficient of variation of 5%.
Closed house conditions are not necessary during a long term test. Leave the test device exposed for 91 days to 12 months under normal living conditions.
