Used for the initial screening of a home for Radon gas and assess the performance of a Radon Mitigation System.
Test Kits must remain undisturbed for 48 to 96 hours under closed house conditions.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has verified this product for accurate radon measurement. NEHA & NRPP listed.
How to Test
If your home has a basement, open and place the canister anywhere in the basement. Do not place the canister in a garage, root cellar, crawl space or sump pump pit. If your house does not have a basement, place the open canister in the lowest livable level of your home in any room except the bathroom, kitchen, laundry room or porch. If testing more than one area of your home, place the other canister in a frequently used living area.
Do not expose the canister to noticeable drafts such as near a window, fireplace or open door. Canister should be placed at least 2 feet above the floor, at least 1 foot away from exterior walls, at least 4 inches away from other objects and at least 3 feet away from windows, doors or other openings. Do not place in cupboard, closet, drawer, etc. Canister should be exposed to the air people breathe.
Remove the cap of the test device and expose to room air for a period of 48 to 96 hours (2-4 days). Do not touch or disturb the test canister during the test period. Do not expose the device to the air for longer than 4 days as over exposure will invalidate the results. When exposure time is complete, securely seal the canister with the cap. Complete the information form and place it with the sample test canister in the U.S. postage prepaid package and mail it immediately. The lab must receive the test within 8 calendar days to have a valid test.

How it Works
The canister is a 6 cm. high by 2.5 cm. diameter high-density polyethylene liquid scintillation vial. The 22-ml capacity vial is designed to hold a small canister near the opening above the scintillating fluid. The canister, made of high-density polyethylene, contains a patented pharmaceutical-grade charcoal-silica adsorption material.
This patented device configuration produces minimum attenuation of the scintillation signal. Perforated end caps allow air to circulate through the mixture and retain any charcoal dust. A polyethylene cap, capable of sealing tightly, prevents the loss of Radon gas from the vial
Alpha particles emitted by the breakdown products of Radon create scintillations, or flashes of light, in the cocktail. A photo-multiplier tube detects these scintillation's, the signal is electronically enhanced and the effect of the alpha particles are counted. Background counts are subtracted and the net counts are entered into a formula with other relevant data yielding quantitative results stated in picoCuries per Liter (pCi/L)
After exposure, the vial is returned to the laboratory for analysis. Scintillation cocktail is added and the Radon allowed an elution period of several hours. The vial is then placed in a shielded chamber for counting.
